Giant Puppets w/Sarah Lovett
Using Reed for Lightweight Form 1

RSVP/Questions: sarah.lovett@gmail.com

The first of 4 workshops using multiple techniques, allowing you the opportunity to directly make art for the 30th Annual Fremont Solstice Parade! Feel free to come to 1 or all of the workshops. You will be building friendly fairy-like creatures that cavort and fly above the street in a playful dance in the Joiboi Giant Puppet Ensemble, conceived by long-time Fremont Arts Council artist Sarah Lovett. Pick up a useful technique or join this playful ensemble. Ensemble participants will create their own costumes and fabulous headpieces and carry or interact with these puppets in the parade. Sarah will be available for consultation on other lightweight techniques for your own pieces.

Everyone is welcome; appropriate for teens and adults.

Instruction on using reed to create volume and structure for puppets and luminaries. The focus will be to create two puppet heads designed by the artist. We will learn to work with wet reed to lay down our designs.

Saturday we will learn to work with wet reed to lay down our designs. You will take away the foundation technique used by Sarah Lovett for puppets; Dogody, Owl, Rainbow Serpent, Coyle, and the Seahorse luminary.

This garland sewing technique is an innovation repurposing paper garland using contemporary materials. We will design, cut, and sew parts to create volume for super light giant puppet bodies. We will then cut Tyvek fabric and sew it into giant paper like body forms.

This will be a fun and challenging workshop. If you have a sewing machine to use please bring it.
