350 Seattle is hosting a batik workshop! Learn how to batik on small swatches of fabric. This is in preparation for work on their Silent Butterfly Wings for their #FremontSolsticeParade ensemble Cool World.

Both the workshop AND the ensemble are open to all! No special skills required. They will show you how!

Batik is a beautiful form of wax resist fabric dying in which wax is melted and used to created lines which then contain die. The wax resist process traces its roots back over 2,000 years to Egypt, China, India, Japan, Nigeria, and Senegal. But the specific batik artform was most highly developed in the island of Java in Indonesia.

Lisa Marcus will lead the workshop. She first learned to batik with the Fremont Arts Council 16 years ago, and has been using the technique in community art projects ever since to create beauty for awareness, and inspiration to join in creating the healthy future we want and need.
